I HAD this thing with the Orient Express - not only because I’m a huge fan of the movie, but all those Orient Express photos and articles online are just too fascinating. It has been on my bucket list for so long!
During my recent trip to Tohoku (The Northeast of Japan), I have experienced the renowned Tohoku EMOTION. It was like a Japanese version of Orient Express to me. The interior was exceptionally classy and exquisite. As a 'scenic restaurant train', the food-serving Tohoku Emotion runs along the Sanriku Coast, showcasing a maleficent harbour view.
Apart from the incredible view, what surprised me the most was the food served- I usually didn't have high expectation on food in train. (But come on it's Japan. What could be bad?) The Tohoku Emotion offered a seasonal menu designed by some of the best chefs from Japan. As suggested by their officials, a new chef takes over the train every six months and the menu is updated twice during his or her half-a-year tenure.
So I had an amazing four-course lunch travelling from Hachinohe to Kuji and every course was amazing. You could also choose to have a free flow sparkling or other drinks (I got like 4 cups of Aomori apple juice. They were this GOOD!) I also love that they put so much effort and created so many details for each dish. Even the petite fours were really nice (when some restaurants just casually served some random cookies) The whole dining experience was really fine and totally memorable. Further, it was really sweet/considerate for them to slow down at each of the scenic spots along the route.
Overall, this was an one of a kind experience and I totally look forward to taking it again.
